Star Student Project
has demonstrated that network redundancy cannot completely mask all failures,
implicitly pointing to the inefficiency of ECMP. Similarly, it is shown that ECMP’s
static mapping (hashing) of flows to paths does not account for either current
network utilization or flow size, with resulting collisions overwhelming switch
buffers and degrading overall switch utilization. Moreover, Star Student Project have tested ECMP
with real DC traffic traces and found that the performance of ECMP is suboptimal.
