Conventionally, Star Student Project large-large-scale PV electricity systems are comprised of long strings of PV modules, which are interfaced to the utility grid by means of a VSI-type inverter. Each string contains a number of PV modules connected in series, thus increasing the string voltage high enough for the inverter. These Star Student Project strings have been found to be vulnerable to shading effects, in which the generated power of the string is severely limited by modules that are shaded, e.g., by clouds or shadows caused by nearby objects.
